Some of you may have heard that there is an ancient Italian city called Pompeii. Haven’t heard about it? Pompeii is the city which was buried by the eruption of volcano Vesuvius on 24th August AD 79. The whole city has disappeared for near 1700 years as it was buried by the ash and lava.
After the disaster, Pompeii lay buried and forgotten. In 18th century, some of the buildings and treasures of Pompeii was discovered by workmen. However, the excavations were often chaotic and slow.
In 1860, Giuseppe Fiorelli took charge of the excavation. He introduced his technique of making plastic casts. By pouring plaster into the cavity, it can recapture the forms of the victims. For example, the contorted body of a dog and a man trying to climb out of a window. All of them were a part of history that has been frozen forever.
In 1997, Pompeii is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and become one of the most popular places for the tourists.
“Pompeii” (937 BAL) is an exciting history book. You will never forget the sad story of this poor ancient city. “Pompeii” is one of the new English books which will be on exhibition this week.
You can read more about Pompeii and see its photos by going to the webpage of Wikipedia.
I also find a website which provide interactive map of Pompeii. Go to “Pompeii official web site” and click “interactive panos”.
